How can I solve this:

The height of a triangle is 3 cm more than the base. The area of the triangle is 17 cm2. Find the base to the nearest hundredth of a cm.

Answer:

let the base be X then height is X+3

area as given in question is 17

area of triangle = 1/2*b*h

17 = 1/2*X*(X+3)

34 = x^2 + 3x

0 = x^2 + 3x - 34

so the roots of equation are

{-3 (+/-) √145}/2
