there are two kinds of auxiliaries
1.primary auxiliary
2.modal auxiliary
primary auxiliary: the helping verbs,be(is,am,are,was,were),have,has,had and do does did are the primary auxiliaries
examples : there were staying at a hotel

modal auxiliaries : they are the helping verbs used with the main verbs to express certain mood or attitude.
