How can refraction be used to gather light?

When a white beam of light is made to pass through a glass prism (rectangular) the beam splits up into a band of 7 different colors (called spectrum). This is called refraction.
To gather light from spectrum take an identical glass prism but inversely place it (upside down) and you will find the beam of white light again.
