Gandhiji used to say "religion can never be separated from politics"what he meant to say that politics must be guided by ethics and moral values drawn from religion so that people should be able to express their needs, interests and demands as a member of a religious community and thus political power should sometimes be able to regulate the practice of religion to prevent discrimination and oppression.
