The cholera bacterium is usually found in water or food sources that have been contaminated by feces (poop) from a person infected with cholera. Cholera is most likely to be found and spread in places with inadequate water treatment, poor sanitation, and inadequate hygiene.

◆ Cholera disease -

  • Cholera is caused by bacteria named Vibrio cholerae.
  • It is a gram-negative, coma shaped bacteria.
  • Cholera is transmitted through contaminated water.
  • Cholera disease is characterised by severe watery diarrhea and dehydration.

● Prevention of cholera -

  1. Cholera vaccine prevents against future infection from cholera.
  2. Drinking contaminated water is avoided.
  3. Always wash hands regularly with soap and water.
  4. Wash fruits/vegetables before eating.
  5. Water need to be boiled before drinking.
  6. Maintain hygienic toilets with proper cleaning.
