how can we balance it.....

FeS2 + O2-------> Fe2O3 + SO2

by both oxidation number method and ion-electron method......

FeS2 has an odd structure; the iron atom has a +2 oxidation number and each of the sulfurs has a -1 oxidation number.

This can be balanced by inspection.

4 FeS2 + 11 O2 --> 2 Fe2O3 + 8 SO2
