couple who was mentoring us noticed that Anne and I, after only three months of marriage, were not as joyful as we had been. The wife took Anne aside and inquired about our situation. She discovered that my bride was a bit disappointed in me because I was not fulfilling her expectations of spiritual leadership in the marriage as I had during the courtship. The mentoring wife suggested that we meet as a couple, and she and her husband would show us something that had benefited them in their married life. We did meet later that night, and the couple demonstrated how to bless one another. Little did we know the impact it would have upon us and our family.
Components of a Blessing
Soon we realized that the blessing was more meaningful when we incorporated some simple components as we spoke the blessing to one another.
• Scripture: Speaking the Word of God over your family is one of the most powerful forces for imparting truth, vision, and the power of God's grace. Your tongue can be used to impart life by speaking a blessing or to impart death by speaking a curse. We remind ourselves of how God sees a person when we use Scripture to impart a blessing.
• Eye Contact: When your face shines upon your family, they know they have favor in your eyes. Children are always searching a parent’s countenance to see if they are in good standing - if they have found grace in your sight.
• Tone of Voice: Your voice can set the tone in your home and with it your family perceives your true thoughts and feelings toward them. The blessing overcomes the many curses a family can experience throughout the day as they encounter so many different types of people, including the interactions among themselves.
Purposes of a Blessing
Speaking a simple blessing, such as Numbers 6:23-26, and using the other components of eye contact and tone of voice is one way for any man to fulfill his role as a father, as mentioned in 1 Thessalonians 2:11. You can exhort, comfort, and challenge your children with tender words spoken to their hearts from the heart of God the Father as expressed in His Word. Blessing your family will help them be able to experience God’s love, their worth to God, and their identity in Christ.
The Priestly Blessing
A Blessing Protects
“The LORD bless thee, and keep thee” (Numbers 6:24).
In Numbers 6, there are three distinct parts of the priestly blessing, which each show a different aspect of God. In the first part God, like a father, imparts a wall of protectionaround His people as He keeps them from harm and from evil. He is a wall of fire by night and a cloud by day.
A Blessing Imparts Grace
“The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee” (Numbers 6:25).
The second part of the priestly blessing affirms that grace has been found in God's sight, and ultimately, through Jesus and His finished work on the cross. We all need daily reminders of this important truth so we can live to learn of God's love rather than live to earn God's love and grace. Knowing that God is glad to be with us imparts great joy, and that knowledge becomes the strength we need for the daily challenges we face.
A Blessing Imparts Peace
“The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace” (Numbers 6:26).
God imparts His peace in the third section of this passage. When God lifts up His countenance upon us, we know that He sees us; He hears us; He understands us. As He comforts us, we can find daily peace in the midst of our trials. We have a secure place in the midst of the storms of life to anchor our souls. The blessing reminds us daily of that safe haven.
A Blessing Requires Faith
“He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; and being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform” (Romans 4:20-21).
Faith is not based on what is seen; it is based upon the Word of God and what is not yet seen. Abraham exampled to us faith when he: "calleth those things which be not as though they were" (Romans 4:17). Like Abraham, we must bless by faith.
As you begin speaking blessing upon your family, God promises to put His name upon them and to bless them. Scripture states that our greatest asset is the blessing of God: "The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it" (Proverbs 10:22).
A Blessing Requires a Credible Messenger
“I have manifested thy name unto the men which the again, and thou shalt stand before me: and if thou take forth the precious from the vile, thou sh
