Hey!!!

Non-metals have low melting and boiling points as compared to metals. All non-metals react with oxygen to form acidic or neutral oxides. Metals react with water to produce metal oxide and hydrogen gas. Metals react with a dilute acid to form a metal salt and hydrogen gas.

Metal oxides are compounds composed of metal ions and oxide ions. Nonmetal oxides are compounds composed of nonmetal atoms and oxygen atoms. The main difference between metal oxides and non metal oxides is that metal oxides are basic compounds whereas nonmetal oxides are acidic compounds.

  • The change of non metallic to metallic character can be best illustrated by the nature of oxides they form.
  • The non metal oxides are acidic or neutral whereas metal oxides are basic in nature.
