First,
we count the no. of electrons of an element...
then,
we arrange 2 electrons in the first shell...
then the remaining electrons in second shell but only 8 electrons, if there r even more, then we use the third shell...

Very firstly u shud know about the shells of an atom i.e K,L,M,N...
Then find out the atomic number of an element and distribute the atoms regarding to rules of electronic configuration i.e there are only 2 atoms in K shell , in second shell there are 8 atoms and in third shell there are 18 atoms .
we can find number of atoms in a particular shell with the help of formula-2 n^{2} where n is shell.
