In order to determine the number of isotopes of an element, you could calculate the binding energies of successive neutrons until it becomes negative. And you should also remove neutrons until some similar criterion, such as spontaneous proton emission. Of course most of the isotopes will be beta radio-active. A good rule of thumb is that for every odd mass number, there is exactly one stable nuclide. And all even mass, odd atomic numbers heavier than 14N are unstable.
