1)Oxidising Agents:- In the reaction if there is any substance which cause addition of oxygen or removal of hydrogen from the other substance then the substance must be oxidising agent.
EX..= C(s) + O2(g) ------ CO2(g)
 Here, carbon is oxidised to carbon dioxide due to the oxygen, then here the oxygen must be oxidising agent.

2)Reducing agents:-
In the reaction if there is any substance which cause addition of hydrogen or removal of oxygen from the other substance then the substance must be reducing agent.
EX.= MgO(s) + C(s) ------ Mg(s) + CO(g)
Here magnesium oxide is reduced to magnesium metal due to carbon, therefore here, the reducing agent must be carbon.

HOPE this will help you to understand in brief.

youtubekrrrana: nyc question by the way ..^-^
SKali: Can you tell me that in the reaction of water and ammonia which one is reducing agent?
youtubekrrrana: i think ammonia is the reducing agent (as it donate the electrons in the reaction with the water)
