How can you check if crystals of ferrous sulphate are fresh

Different oxidation state have different impact over the reaction.

If FeSo4 isn't freshly prepared , iron will get oxidised -

Fe(II) reacts (in presence of O2) to give Fe(III)

this happens because it achieves half stable configuration in +3 state
