Assuming the N and S poles ( ends ) of the magnet are marked, place the magnet on something that can float freely in a basin of water, such as a piece of styrofoam ( expanded polystyrene foam ) or a suitable piece of a suitable wood. Place the magnet on the float in a basin of water. Ensure you move other magnetic things away from the bowl of water, make sure the float is not touching the sides or bottom of the bowl…observe. The magnet will align itself such that the “N” pole points ( roughly ) to the magnetic north….that is what the “N” pole on a magnet IS: it is the “North seeking pole”.
Rather bizarrely, that means that the north magnetic pole of the earth is the same polarity as the “S” pole on a bar magnet.
