C2H6 - alkane, general formula - CnH2n+ 2
C2H4 - alkene., general formula - CnH2n

- Ethane has molecular formula CH3-CH3 while ethene has molecular formula CH2=CH2.
- Ethane is saturated compound and don't undergo addition reactions while ethene is unsaturated and undergoes addition reactions.
To chemically distinguish ethane from ethene both are subjected to reaction with bromine water.
1) Ethane doesn't react with bromine water.
CH3-CH3 + Br2 --> NO REACTION
2) Ethene undergoes bromination with bromine water.
CH2=CH2 + Br2 --> Br-CH2-CH2-Br
