Wrap a metal piece of sodium in wire gauze and drop it in a trough containing cold water and invert an eudiometer over the metal. It will be observed that metal dissolves by giving an yellow flame with a pop sound showing the gas formed is hydrogen and remaining solution which is soapy to touch and turns red litmus paper blue so alkaline nature.
