To Helen, museums and art stores were also sources of pleasure and inspiration. It might have seemed strange to many that the hand unaided by sight could feel action, sentiment and beauty in the cold marble but it was true that she derived genuine pleasure from touching great works of art. As her finger tips traced the line and curve, she could discover the thought and emotion which the artist had portrayed. Helen could feel hate, courage and love in the faces of gods and heroes just as she could detect them in living faces she was permitted to touch. She could feel in Diana's posture the grace and freedom of the forest and the spirit that tamed the mountain lion and subdued the fiercest passions. It was a delightful experience for her altogether. The visit to the Boston Art Museum had also instilled in her a sense of experiencing history through tactile means as if history came alive in the texture and structure of the objects.
