India is a federal (or quasi-federal) democratic republic with a parliamentary system of government largely based on the UK model. Parliament is the “supreme legislative body of India” comprised of the President and the two Houses – Rajya Sabha (the Council of States) and the Lok Sabha (the House of the People).

We can say that India has a democratic form of government because the government is formed by the political party that wins a majority in the general elections. The elections are conducted fairly, periodically and freely.

The government has limited powers as per the constitution. Government functions as per the constitution. Government is bound by the judiciary. Government makes acts/laws through the majority in the houses of people's representatives.

Government respects freedom and rights of people as per constitution. The government is responsible and is responsible to the people. Government has to explain its actions to the head of state when asked clarifications.
