because sound waves travel in the direction of waves..

Anonymous: if it is so then the sound waves will be transversal

longitudinal waves are those waves in which particles moves in the direction of wave.....this is why sound wave is longitudinal as its particles moves in the
direction of waves.

Characteristics of sound are:-
•Wavelength
it is the distance between two consecutive crusts and troughs
•Amplitude
the maximum height to which the particle reaches during its movement
•time period
time taken to complete one oscillation
• frequency
oscillations per second
•velocity
speed of waves
