I, personally, would prefer to use academics to critically analyze and evaluate the values, beliefs, customs, and practices of a local community, and help them keep what is good and replace the rest with something more salubrious for persons in the community. The values, beliefs, customs, and practices of a local community are not always good. Consider, e.g., ritural genital mutilation of children (FGM, etc.).

Wilfred Bion wrote that social customs are shared hallucinoses aka social psychoses. Who would want to help promote potentially baleful things without first examining them to make ture they are OK? For, all things in human life which have not been critically evaluated and shown to be good are good only by accident of fate, and no one can count no luck to produce good outcomes.

Ther is a subdiscipline of sociology and historiography which I thin is very good: The sociology of daily life, and what I think is called Annals historiography: the historical study of the lives of the little people who bear the burden of history and do not appear in history books as aggregates who die as foot soldiers in wars, etc.

There is a great book: “History: A novel”, by Elsa Morante. As for social customs, studies in the past 50 years now about the historry of childrearing are close to devastating. Alice Miller is a good place to start here: “The drama of the gifted child”, “Thou shalt not be aware” and “For your own good”.

I call my own social surround of origin in 1059’s middle class split level suburbia USA, an: Abwelt, playing on the word “Umwelt”, which means a wild animal’s natural habitat before it is wrecked by things like highways (highways are social customs of a group!) cutting it up, etc. + “ab” which in latin means “fallen away from “, etc., as in “ab-use”. So prove social customs before helping them continue to be practiced, and one can only do this well if one knows what the alternatives are.
