As we move across a period size of cation, anion as well as atoms decreases due to increase in the number of electrons in the same shell. This leads to increase in effective nuclear charge experienced by the last electronand so decrease in the size of the cation, anion or atoms.
As we go down the group, new electrons are added in new shells this leads to decrease in effective nuclear charge and increase in the size of cation, anion or atoms.
