Chloroalkanes are prepared from alcohols by treating them with HX + anhyd. Zncl2 / Pcl5 /Pcl3 etc.
Chloroalkanes are prepared from thionyl chloride that is SoCl2 by following reaction
ROH + SoCl2 gives RCl + So2 + Hcl
This methid is consider as best method to prepare Chloroalkanes as so2 and hcl are gaseous in nature.

Chloroalkane is prepared by the reaction of alcohol with thionyl chloride,
- R-OH + SOCl₂ → R-Cl + SO₂ +HCl
- Alcohol + Thionyl chloride → Chloroalkanes + Sulphur dioxide + hydrochloric acid.
- This is considered the best method for the preparation of chloroalkanes.
- As we can see, the by-products (sulfur dioxide and hydrochloric acid) are gaseous reagents.
- They can be easily removed from the mixture, leaving behind chloroalkane in its purest form.
- Chloroalkanes are used as additives in rubber, paints, textiles, and other coatings.
