Interesting question. Private property has its advantages and disadvantages. With private property, one has the incentive for its upkeep. Tragedy of the Commons has led Governments across the world (including in India) to privatize many public properties. Apparently, the Madhya Pradesh also privatized a river, only to backtrack after locals protested.

In the days when man was a hunter gatherer, there was no private property since we were all the time moving from one place to another. Once farming developed, we settled and therein this concept of personal property came in. WHile it has its advantages as mentioned above, it has also led to class divides, etc.

The Communists did try to abolish private property, wherein all property was owned by the State. And we all know the result of that.

Therefore, to my mind, it would be difficult to operate without this concept of private property.
