How could you explain metals and non-metals on the basis of electronic configuration of an element? Justify with examples.

Answer: Elements which contain 1 to 3 electrons in their outermost shell are metals. Elements containing 4 to 7 electrons in their valence shell are non-metals.

metals atom generally loose electrons to reach nearest inert gas configuration

for example.. sodium atom loose one electron to complete its octet

non metal atom always gain electrons to reach inert gas or noble gas configuration

for example chlorine gain one electron to complete its octet
