Cu is the copper atom which when represented in a dot and cross diagram it has all the energy levels and the total number of protons intact.

Copper react by lose of two electrons form copper ions which is written as Cu2+

The difference between copper ions and copper atoms is that copper atoms have two more electrons than the copper ions.

Copper atoms also have one extra energy level compared to copper ions.

These two differences are elaborated in a dot and cross diagram of both copper ions and copper atoms.

well good question!!!
Thanks for asking it.

Difference between Cu and Cu²⁺:

---> Cu is a neutral atom where number of protons and electrons are equal.
Cu- Atomic number - 29
Number of protons=29
Number of electrons =29
Electronic configuration: 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s1 3d10

----> Cu2+ is a cation formed by lossing 2 electrons.
Cu²⁺ : Number of protons : 29
number of electrons : 27
As proton number is more, nuclear Charge for Cu²⁺ will be more and atomic size of Cu²⁺ decreases, Ionization potential is more.
So atomic radius of Cu atom is more than Cu2+ ion.
