Devavrat was the original birth name of Bhishma, the eighth son of Devi Ganga and King Shaantanu. Was given the name Bhishma because of his Bhishma Pratigya of never marrying and bearing any sons and ruling over the kingdom of Hastinapura despite being the eldest born of the King so his father could marry the fisherman’s daughter Satyavati and only her sons could be the rulers.

गंगा ने जब कुरू वंश के राजा शांतनु से विवाह किया, तो उन्होंने उनके सामने एक शर्त रखी थी कि मैं जो भी काम करूंगी, आप उसमें हस्तक्षेप नहीं करेंगे। जिस दिन आप हस्तक्षेप करेंगे, उस दिन मैं आपको छोड़ कर चली जाऊंगी। महाराज शांतनु से विवाह के पश्चात गंगा को एक-एक करके सात पुत्रों की प्राप्ति हुई।
गंगा ने अपने सभी सातों पुत्रों को एक-एक करके गंगा में प्रवाहित कर दिया। महाराज शांतनु इस दृश्य को देखते तो बहुत दुखी होते। जब गंगा को आठवें पुत्र की प्राप्ति हुई, तो उसे भी वे अन्य पुत्रों की भांति गंगा में प्रवाहित करने के लिए ले जाने लगीं। महाराज शांतनु से अब रहा नहीं गया।
