By the end of World War I, most of Africa had been effectively colonized.

Menelik II, emperor of Ethiopia, led his army to establish unique feat in March 1896, defeating General Oreste Barateiri's Italian army and its Eritrean allies at the Battle of Adwa.

Once colonialism was established resistance tended to be more directly aimed against the imposition of capitalism on African societies.

As the impact of colonialism became more widespread, resistance increased and became more intense in the middle decades of the 20th century.

There were a number of armed rebellions against colonial rule all across Africa.

Women also rebelled against the colonization as before it they enjoyed higher status. During Colonization Britishers started to treat them in an inhumane way.

Violent Resistance -

Some African societies resisted colonial rule violently. They refused to allow to be rule by the colonialists. An example of those who resisted colonial rule are the Mau Mau(Kenya) who fought the colonialists violently. The Ethiopians also resisted colonial rule and eventually fought and won at the battle of Adowa The Zulu from South Africa also rebelled against colonial masters.

Non-violent Resistance -

Some African societies also conducted non-violent resistance. Non violent resistance included negotiation and protest.

Passive Resistance -

Some Africans were cunning and they devised clever methods of passively resisting the colonialists. They stole from the caravans of the colonialists and destroyed their infrastructure.
