The Alwars and Nayanars were Indian saints who reach out to the ordinary people by using hymns and poems of common Indian languages. Nayanmars worshiped Shiva; the Nayanmars were against the caste system . Nayanmars reached out to common people through the use of Hymns compiled in a book called Thevaram. The Alwars prayed to Vishnus, they wrote and spoke in Telugu and Tamil languages. The saints facilitated the growth of religion through the use of local languages in India.
