Ashoka was a great person and wanted future generations to also follow his rules to have peace in their life. He made dhammas which was moral conduct to respect all religions. These were engraved in edicts and inscriptions. In one of the edicts, Ashoka says: “All men are my children and I desire that they may live in peace and happiness.” This tells about the love Ashoka had for his people. Edicts provide lots of information. Most of Ashoka’s life was engraved in edicts. This is how Ashoka spoke to his people. During his reign he used Pali or Prakrit as his language. All the edicts were engraved in this language.
