Awadh was first involved in independence when Begum Hazrat Mahal,along with her able commander Maulvi Ahmadullah, launched a surprise attack on the British Residency. Many officers, including Head Resident Henry Lawrence were killed. Also, Nana Sahe revolted with his commanders Tantia Tope and Azimullah due to refusal of British to give him the pension his father received from the British.
