Bama learns about untouchability and caste system
- One day when Bama was returning home from school, she saw an elder of her village carrying a food packet by a string for his landlord.
- Initially, Bama thought, it was funny and laughed about it.
- But when she narrated, the incident to her elder brother, he explained the reason behind it.
- He said that it was because of the caste system and that the society was divided into upper and lower castes. He also told her that they belonged to a lower caste and were considered as untouchable, by the upper caste.
Thus Bama came to know about untouchability and caste system.
One day, Bama, while returning home from school, observed weird behavior one of the elders belonging to her community. He was carrying a packet containing some food in a manner that made her laugh. As she reached home and explained the strange incident to her elder brother, Annan was not amused at it. He explained to her the reason behind the elder’s strange behavior. The reason was they belonged to a community that was considered lower caste. So, people from upper caste refrained from touching them; if anyone touched any member of their community they would think they would get polluted. He further told her that since they belonged to lower caste community they were not any given respect and dignity. This explanation infuriated Bama. That day she learnt about untouchability.
