The British had done many reforms like
Ban on Sati , Ban on child marriage, introduction of girls schools , Widow remarriage Act etc. to bring about equality and social reforms. To reduce caste distinctions the British introduced Railways and western education where all subjects as people would be treated equally. In railway compartments people of all castes had to sit together and in schools people gained equal learnings about how different things. (I think this might be the answer ..)
