He described that the river and Lakes turned green due to pollution and there were lots of smoking chimneys. And the workers were called as the hand. They have the identity just as the instrument for production.

in his book, hard times, he represented industrial workers as hands who ran machines only nothing more than of that. these workers were treated badly that days. in his book, oliver twist, he represent life ofa small child in city. children had to work hard in industries in order to own their living.
