Salvador Allende who was the president of Chile was thrown out of the post of president when a military coup held by augusto Pinochet was held in 1973.
Pinochet's military dictatorship came to an end after he decided to hold a referendum in 1998. he was quite confident that people would say yes to his rule but he received a decisive no. this let Pinochet to loose his political then military powers.
since after the end of Pinochet's rule Chile became a democracy one again and had 4 presidential elections till then in which many political parties have participated.
