In 1988,pinochet held a referendum.he felt the people of the country would approve of him continuing in power but the citizens did not vote pinochet.this led to pinochet first losing his political and then his military power.slowly,the army's role in the country's government has been eliminated.Elected members came to rule the country.thus democracy was restored.later in the elections,michelle bachelet,was elected the president of chile in  january,2006.
