Raraja 1 and Rajendra 1 were the most powerful chola leaders.a minor chiefly family known as the Muttaraiyar  held power in kaveri delta.they were subordinate to the pallava kings of kanchipuram.vijayala,who belonged to the ancient chiefly family of cholas from Uraiyur,captured the delta from the Muttaraiyar in the middle of the 9th century.the succesors of vijayalaya conquered the neighbouring regions and the kingdom grew in size and poer.

The Chola dynasty was one of the longest-ruling dynasties in the history of southern India. The earliest datable references to this Tamil dynasty are in inscriptions from the 3rd century BC left by Ashoka, of the Maurya Empire. As one of the Three Crowned Kings, the dynasty continued to govern over varying territory until the 13th century AD.

The heartland of the Cholas was the fertile valley of the Kaveri River, but they ruled a significantly larger area at the height of their power from the later half of the 9th century till the beginning of the 13th century
