General belief is that Cricket in India started when British came which is true.

It goes back in India as far as early 18th century upto 1721. But Officially first cricket club in India was setup in 1792 as Calcutta Cricket Pub which is where actually Eden Garden is established today.

In Mumbai, it was 1797 when the first match was hosted, and First Indian to play cricket took part in that match.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made its debut in 1928.

On 31st December, 1600, East India Company was formed under a Royal Charter. In 1612, the British defeated the Portuguese in a battle in Surat and, gradually, both the British crown and the Mughal rulers allowed the Company to trade in India. Successively, trading outposts were set up in Surat (1619), Madras (1639), Bombay (1668) and Calcutta (1690).
The earliest reference to cricket being played in India was in Cambay, near Baroda, in 1721. The Calcutta Cricket and Football Club, or CC&FC, was known to be in existence in 1792. In 1864, a First Class match was played for the first time between Madras and Calcutta.
In view of the above, Cricket was introduced into India by the British traders belonging to the East India Company before the Company's rule effectively began in 1757.
