It is very important for a cotton growing country like India to utilise most of the yarn that is spun in the country to be woven into fabric locally in order to add value and retain maximum of the profit here rather than export cotton yarn overseas. For doing this, the Government has to step forward and encourage both the yarn manufacturers as well as the weavers to spur this activity.
One other reason for ensuring that local weavers are encouraged is because of the worldwide demand for Indian sarees and cotton garments due to their intricate designs and unique nature. However, quality improvement and technical upgradation should take place wherever required. Use of ecofriendly dyes must also be encouraged.
Bangladesh, which is equal to the size of an Indian state, is today the second biggest hub for ready-made garments after China. A large part of the yarn required in Bangladesh goes from Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. We can certainly lower our yarn export to this country and encourage our own weavers.
