In their desperation to get a Christmas gift for their spouse they each sell their prized belonging. Jim sells his gold pocket watch that had been handed down to him and buys Della a pair of tortoise shell hair combs. Della in her desperation cuts her hair and sells it for a chain for Jim's gold pocket watch.
When Jim gets home and sees Della with her short hair he is very quiet, gives her a puzzling look and almost seems confused. Della explains she has cut her hair to buy Jim a gift. She pleads with him not to be angry but she is still met with a strange look and confusion from Jim. Jim explains to Della that nothing like a haircut could make him feel any less love for her, but if she would open the gift it might explain his feeling inside.
Jim has just sold his most prized possession in hopes of buying his wife the perfect Christmas present, sacrifice for love. However, when he comes home he realize this is all useless now, a Christmas gift she wont be able to use.
