Duke met his tragic end in a road accident. After Chuck Hooper's promotion to the post of regional manager, the family moved to a new house in the suburbs. On the evening of October 12, 1957, the Hoopers had guests. Suddenly, over the babble of voices, Chuck heard the screech of brakes outside. A speeding car had run Duke over and he was critically injured. He was taken to a veterinarian and survived only until 11o 'clock the next morning.
