Before the invention of the wheel, early humans used to travel by walking and on donkeys and horses

  • The first form of transportation on land was walking. In the latest stages of the physical evolution of human beings, man had learned how to walk upright on his two legs. This happened around 5 million years ago
  • But walking could only let man travel a certain amount of distance before he got tired, or needed rest
  • After that, humans started exploiting animals, especially donkeys and horses for transportation purposes, around 4,000 BC
  • But again, animals had physical constraints to carry human beings and it did not take too long before these animals had to rest
  • Then it was only around 3,500 BC that humans invented the wheel, and started using it for transportation
