By the 1890s gas lamps were pretty good. Originally they flickered annoyingly, this could be reduced by putting them in a glass tube like a kerosene lamp but it did not eliminate it. But the Austrian chemist Carl Auer von Welsbach developed a mantle which was heated by the gas and glowed very brightly. At first they gave a greenish light which was not popular but about 1895 he same up with a different formulation which gave a while light. This system was a serious competitor for electric light to almost 20 years, where there was a gas supply. By about 1905 mantles were adapted to kerosene lamps with wicks and pressure lamps where they are still used today.
