Factors That Consolidated Study of English in Post-Independent India
There were many reasons behind English gaining a strong foothold in the post-independence era in India. The first and foremost was English had become common language of the people belonging to multi-cultural and multi-lingual states and regions of the country. After independence, Hindi was declared as the national language; but not all the states were willing and keen to accept it as their official language. Since English was being taught at almost all the famous schools in all the states, people found it convenient to use English as lingua franca.
Secondly, owing to the long association with the language, people had become emotionally attached with the language, so they wanted to keep it in spite of the fact that the Britishers had gone.
Thirdly, the modern leaders, intellectuals, and intelligentsia preferred keeping English in the country. Though the Government had planned to replace it with the National Language, however, the ever increasing popularity and the above mentioned factors always stood in support of the language.
Hence, English remained one of the most popular languages in India after independence.
