By switching to farming, humans could for the first time in history be sure of what and when they would eat. While nomadic cultures had to rely on chance and were therefore much more vulnerable to natural forces, agrarian cultures could produce and store food for later, making them less vulnerable. The sudden excess of food produced extra wealth that could be channeled towards other economic activities.
