The First World War resulted many economic problems for the people in India because to finance the defence expenditure British government had imposed high custom duties and taxes on Indians. In addition, Indians are forced to join the British army also alienated the people from the colonial rulers.

During 1918-19 and 1920-21, crops failed in many parts of India which led to the food shortages. The nationalist leaders had taken advantage of this situation to encourage the people against the colonial rulers. So, in this way the First World War helped in the growth of the National Movement in India.
