Rajkumar Shukla first met Gandhi in the annual convention of the Indian national Congress held in Lucknow 1916.He requested Gandhi to visit has district to help the poor peasants in their fight against the British landlords. Gandhi told him that he had an appointment in Cawnpore and was also committed to go to other part of India. But Shukla was resolute and he accompanied Gandhi everywhere from Cawnpore to Ahmedabad begging Gandhi to fix a date . Gandhi was impressed by Shukla's tenacity and story , and told Shukla to reach Calcutta and take him from there . Later,they boarded a train to Bihar and went to Champaran .
