For defendind khalfa's temporal powers a khilafat committe was formed in Bombay in march 1919 led by younger leaders like Muhammad ali and Shaukat Ali.
They began discussing with Gandhi a united mass action. Mahatma gadhi saw this an opportunity to unite Hindus and Muslims together. So Gandhi at Calcutta September1920 convince other leader of the ccongree to support the struggle against khilafat as well as for swaraj.
