Gandhi was opposed to meat-eating from the start, but it was Gandhi's vow to give up milk and milk products that made him close to being a vegan. He stood by his vows as much as his mortal being allowed and spread the message of vegetarianism by inspiring others through his actions and words.

Hope this helps!

Answer:

Ahimsa was his goal. It became the core of his Satyagrahi movement, and the core of his life. When everyone was talking and thinking of wars and rebellion against the British, where did Mahatma learned about non-voilence? One main factor was his oath to be always be a vegetarian. Meat cannot come without killing animals. If the life of animals was important to him, how much more would he value life, whether it's the life of an Indian or a British.
