Answer:
Gandhiji saw in the Khilafat Movement an opportunity for uniting the Hindus & Muslims. He said that the Congress plea for Hindu- Muslim unity "would be an empty phrase if the Hindus hold aloof from the Muslims when their vital interests are at stake". Mahatma Gandhi was elected as President of the All - India Khilafat Conference in November 1919. He advised the Khilafat Committee to adopt a policy of Non-Cooperation with the Government.

Answer:
Gandhiji's idea of secularism explains that the politics and religion are inseparable.’ Sarva dharma sambhav ‘ was the theme of his idea of secularism. In this line of understanding, his support to the khilafat movement in his political agitation , had certainly not diluted his secular credential.
Perhaps it was the pan India political agitation in the name of non-cooperation movement when the highest level of Muslim participation was evident. Convincing INC to include Khilafat agenda along with Punjab wrongs with non-cooperation was a brilliant decision by Mahatma Gandhi that he could find a common platform to bring up all sections of society together for a bigger common goal of swaraj.
In actually, khilafat was not Indian issue but Muslim sentiments attached with the Turkish khalifa and his exodus by British , gave an opportunity to Mahatma Gandhi to channelize the Muslim sentiments against British in a bigger movement of non-cooperation movement.
Hence at the one hand , Truth and Non –violence were the weapons of Mahatma Gandhi, on the other hand nurturing and mobilizing support of all religious people in the struggle was a secular means . Hence certainly his secular credential was not at stake.
