Gandhiji held that 'a separate electorate for Depressed Classes is harmful for them and for Hinduism... separate electorates would simply vivisect and disrupt it (Hinduism)'. He took a stance on Poona pact and went on a fast unto death. The fast was 'intended to sting Hindu conscience into right religious action ' and not let the British rule divide the Hindus on religious lines. He named the depressed classes as 'harijans' or children of god.
