After Helen lost her seeing and hearing disabilities, she learnt to make crude signs to communicate with others. When she needed something to eat, she made signs using her hands and other gestures. For example if she needed bread then she would make gesture of cutting of the slices and buttering them. If she wanted ice-cream for dinner she made the sign for working the freezer and shivered.
